The use of flow measurement techniques dates back a long time. The oldest method of flow measurement (around 5000 BC) was reported in the Sumerian cities located in the southern part of Iraq, near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. They used methods to measure flow for managing urban water through canals and qanats. In this method, a simple dam was placed in the flow path, and by measuring the water height passing over this dam, they could calculate how much water was flowing through the canal. In 1450 AD, an Italian architect named Battista Alberti invented the first mechanical anemometer. This anemometer consisted of a circular plate that was positioned vertically in the wind path, and the air pressure caused it to rotate. The angle of this plate indicated the wind speed. This anemometer is the first recorded device used for measuring wind speed.
