Grade 304 is part of the ASTM A182 standard, which applies to valves, flanges, fittings, and other components exposed to pressure and temperature conditions. This standard covers stainless steel materials, with Grade 304 classified as forged stainless steel.
The buyer is responsible for specifying the grade of items such as valves, fittings, flanges, etc., that need to be procured. This selection depends on the design requirements, operating conditions, mechanical properties, high-temperature specifications, or corrosion resistance characteristics.
All forged grades, including 304, 304L, 316, and 316L, must undergo appropriate heat treatment to meet the required design and chemical specifications.
Grade 304, classified as forged stainless steel, has its chemical properties detailed in the table below.
| Carbon % | Manganese % | silicon % | sulfur % | phosphorus % | Chromium % | Nickel % | |
| 0.08 | 2 | 1 | 0.03 | 0.045 | 18.0-20.0 | 8.0-11.0 | |
The mechanical properties of grade 304 are as follows:
| TENSILE STRENGTH KSI (Mpa) | Yield strength ksi (Mpa) | Elongation in 2in. Or 50mm |
| 75 (515) | 30 (205) | 30 |
